Curiosities and Myths

Okay, I think it safe to say that this area should be explored and cleared up. Now, as a black female, who has a good sense of how black hair is folically-structured, African or Afro-Caribbean hair -- due to its natural coarseness -- is well-designed for dreadlocks. For those wanting a general idea as to how they are formed, it is a process that involves leaving the hair alone, not combing it, and stop putting chemicals in the hair. The hair is continuously twisted, with the aid of dread wax. Eventually the hair will fuse into locks, hence the name of the style, dreadlocks. Depending on how thick one's hair is, dreads can take from eight months to several years to grow out long and properly. However, any non-black can wear the style, especially if their hair has a natural, tight curl. Nevertheless, there are several myths about the notion of wearing dreadlocks. Here are a few examples, with some of the information provided by Dreadfaq.com:

  1. 'Locks are smell/dirty/unhealthy.' This isn't true, and you can shampoo them regularly, and/or dip them in saltwater."Dreadlocks adjust to how often they are washed.
  2. (See Myth 1). It is NOT possible for bacteria to grow on them
  3. (See Myth 1). They do not smell, but there will be a visible 'scent' if you absolutely never wash the hair. This applies the same if you have regular hair.
  4. 'You can't get a job with dreads.' It is possible to get a good, stable career, even if you wear 'locks.
  5. 'People with dreads are druggies.' This is absolutely silly. There are many people who do not wear dreads that use drugs (by the way I am not condoning drug use).
