Princess Anne
Princess Anne,
The Princess Royal

The Princess Royal, born in 1950, is the Queen's only daughter and her second child. Anne is eighth in line for the throne after her younger brothers Andrew and Edward - although under her mother's new equal-sex ruling, she would have made number four.

Anne has led a noble life of horse riding and charity galas. An it-girl as a teenager, she narrowly missed a bronze medal at the 1976 Montreal Olympics and today she is involved with some 200-odd charitable organisations.

In 1974 her bodyguard and three other men were injured protecting her when a gunman tried to kidnap her. A ransom note was later found in his pocket asking the Queen for £3m.

Like her mum, Anne decided not to allow her husband a royal title, so he remained a slightly disgruntled Captain Mark Phillips. The second husband doesn't get a title either, and he too remains Commander Timothy Laurence.

Anne's contribution to the nation has been two handsome and still quite normal - and untitled - children; Peter, 25, and Zara, 20. Speculation about their various liaisons will give the media something to gnaw on for years yet, generating far more garish headlines than Anne's tireless charity work ever will.
