Camilla Parker Bowles

Camilla is Charles's long-term friend and companion. She has received mixed public reactions: some see her as "the other woman" responsible for the end of Charles and Diana's marriage; others view her as his true love.

Born in 1947, she first met Prince Charles in the early seventies. Believing Charles would never propose, she married Andrew Parker Bowles. Charles married Lady Diana Spencer in July 1981.

Camilla and Charles remained close friends throughout their marriages until it was revealed that they had had an affair. Charles and Diana separated in 1992, and Camilla and Andrew divorced in 1995.

After Diana's death, Camilla made fewer public appearances until Prince William invited her to tea at the Palace. She then began to accompany Charles on charity engagements.

Charles has occasionally hinted that they should marry but the British constitution would have to be changed to allow a divorcee to marry the Defender of the Faith. The majority of the UK now approve this proposal but are adamant that Camilla should not become Queen.
